[Typo3-dev] Typo3 alternative to cron (?)

But for what reason? Cron is designed for exactly for that job.
I was once thinking about having a "cron" service in TYPO3.

It would be only 1 real cron job who checks every x (to be defined) minutes
if there is a task to be done within TYPO3.

However I currently don't need it, but probably someone wants to work on
that?
