[Typo3-dev] Format of t3x files?

Ok, this may be a silly question, but I'm wondering what the format of
the extension t3x files is (be it compressed nor uncompressed). I'd have
expected a zip or tar.gz file format, but according to my GNU file
program it's not any format it recognizes (which is rather a lot AFAIK).
Can anyone here point in the right direction for this (google was pretty
unhelpful as well...).
