well, I' m currently working on a syntax-highlighting for KATE and jEdit.

Both use XML-Files to store highlight-definitions so XML is definitely 
the format to use (of course :) ).

I'll make these definitions public if they are ready to use/test.


There are other approaches a BE-Editor written in JAVA:
