The user groupmembership is not normalized *because* of performance. You 
avoid the join that would be necessary everytime the page is hit (cache 
and access control).

Sidenote: Not that I think it would matter much now seeing how many 
classes are loaded and bytes of memory are copied and moved around for 
every page.
