In this case it's optional but for larger changes, patches are very helpful.

That's not very helpful. Imagine someone else made a change in that file in
the meantime - how will you locate the changes then?

It's an improvement, not a bug. Anyway, Ingmar has already added this... :-)

BTW, I think there are many similar occurences in the code, so keep your
eyes open...
