[Typo3-dev] extension to query external databases

Hi everyone

I'm going to relaunch a website with data in external databases. I planning to use that data without inserting the tables into Typo3. My vision is to write an extension to get this data  via php and sql. Is there someone who writes such extension. If so please drop me a line.  
If  not could someone give me hints how to realize this?
