you can change it by redefining typoscript styles or simply removing markers
from html
if this is not enough - you may extend php classes responsible

it is possible today too

you may define design by css stylesheet, html template, typoscript - any
combination of them. just that typoscript was quite tuff for me to
understand, but with the time i started to see its power over other methods.
but yes - design is better to be done with html templates and not typoscript
(my point of view).
