I think this is a very nice solution! I agree with Karsten Dambekalns
that it should be a optional feature, though. In general, I think most
systemcalls should be wrapped and hooked, so they can be modified.
Sure, it might be a little slow, but TYPO3 doesn't (shouldn't?) talk
that much to the filesystem during production, afterall. Any effort to
make it easier for a random user to download and try out TYPO3
completely hasslefree, is a good thing. Somebody looking for "one of
them CMSs", isn't likely to use too much time to figure out how to
install it. The first CMS Joe Nobody gets to show a page that he can
edit, is (usually) the one he'll stick with.
And it's OK that it is a little slow, as long as we can tell people that
if they are serious about serving a high load website, they should look
into getting it all to work without FTP. But at that time, they're
hooked on TYPO3, and will be willing to spend a little effort/money on it.
On a related note: I recently saw a commercial bulletin board/CMS offer
automated install. Basically, give us your FTP username/password, and
the same for your DB, and we'll install and test for you. This should be
fairly trivial to implement, and could give quite a boost in try-outs. I
am willing to spend some time on this - would that be a feature of interest?
