You are probably right. The Auth Services system changes the behaviour
of the t3lib_userauth class. I assume that extensions extending that
class will be liable to have problems with the new system. But then:
has this class ever been part of TYPO3's API?

Are you actually trying to use the ldap_* system?

Maybe. I would like to tune this topic to Kaspers timeframe for the
next TYPO3 release. If discussion in Kitzbuehl is still early enough I
am happy to spend an evening presenting and discussion the system.
