I don't think setting it to something higher than 4.1.0 is necessary.

If there are any functions missing in PHP 4.1.0 that Typo3 uses, it 
might be an option to use http://pear.php.net/package/PHP_Compat which 
provides new functions missing in old versions of PHP such as 
file_get_contents().
