Since this is very urgent, I'd like to ask you to comment on my 
suggested fix. It would work, wouldn't it?

What exactly are the obstacles we're facing?

I'm personally very commited to fixing this bug since I'd be glad if we 
could rid of all those mails on the install mailinglists that deal with 
the various path problems.

If you look at the most-read FAQ items on Typo3.org, you'll see it's the 
FAQ called "Troubles with path @ install".
