OK, looks like I'm "beating a dead horse" here, but I still have to go
with the internal versioning vs. external naming...
It's a lot like code/layout abstraction, and I do believe that it
addresses the issue Kasper originally brought up.
While all of us in the geek underground know and care about Linux kernel
versions, and interminably itterated versions of every other piece of
code out there... you know that most of the world wants to know if they
are on RH 7.3 or 9.0 or ES, etc. That is marketing... I mean, what was
RH8? Something like Typo3 rc1... that's all. and ES? that is like 7.0 to
10.0 all rolled into one with no embarasments like 8...
In other words... most of the people who are BUYING stuff need a NAME...
not a specification.
Martin and others believe that consistent versioning is vital... and
they are right... Kasper (IMO) is asking about "naming" for lack of a
better term. "People" think that 3.5.0 and 3.6.1 are basically the same
thing. "Programmers" know that they are probably worlds apart.
So keep the versioning consistent, and release "milestones" (numbered if
you must), or "products" (possibly with names: 'stoggie', 'cusano',
'cohiba') so that people with MONEY can feel GOOD when they give it to
ME... uh, and YOU... ;)
