[Typo3-dev] HMENU.special.directory can't return sublevels

TSRef says:
"Don't set .entryLevel for a HMENU when using this option! Also be aware
that this selects pages for the first level in the menu. Submenus by
menuObjects 2+ will be created as usual."

Could someone pleae explain "as usual" to me?
Problem is that during the last two months for some reason all my Projects
use two different branches incl. submenus.
I currently work with entryLevel and maxItems and begin.
But this is not very flexible.
As well, Is there a little more Information on how to fill the userDefined
Array without digging code?
