In fact this is not as common as some people might think. Adobe never does
that. Apple always does with the X-versions, but with none of the other
software. Microsoft does it sometimes with the OS-versions (ME), but stopped
again (Longhorn is not a name for official communication)
The reason is, that it is more work building a brand (like Panther) than
simply using the logic of numbers and mostly it is not needed. Apple needed
to create a sensation around X because it started off as public beta and
they had to create an attraction to win over OS 9 users (so called laggards
in Marketing speak).
IN other words: unless you plan putting much much more effort into marketing
TYPO3 versions, names are no option for external marketing.
You can of course use them for development communication, but why?
