I don't agree. Maybe it'd be an interesting discussoin what should be 
patre of the core, and what part of the default cms distribution. If it 
was me I'd drop quite a large number of aging "standard" extensions.

But unlike you, I don't think this is the right time to add tables.

On the contrary I'd delay this to a DBAL-enabled Typo3. Ideally a 
community effort would bring the old extensions up to date with the 
current Typo3 capabilities or new ones would be created. Then it is time 
  to think about it.
