I don't think there will be any changes. That is: optimized for 4.2.9.
Working ok with most other versions.

I think the overall goal is to get rid of IM, and base it on GD, which
might be possible at some point.

Note: this is my impression from what I've heard and read in the
TODO.txt of 3.6.0-dev, there might be things going on that I'm not aware
of.
