[Typo3-dev] Smarty integration

maybe smarty integration isn't very smarty :) but i'm often wondering 
why typo depends on so much elements that are written from scratch.
If for example the PEAR::DB abstraction layer would've been used, the 
database access would be a much more compatible approach, which is 
preventing the core developers from reinventing the wheel, when it comes 
to typo3 database abstraction.

- but maybe it's just because typo is in development for so long.

P.S.: Someone yelled "SMARTY!" and just some days later the extension 
was born ... hmm, maybe this works: "STAGING ENVIRONMENT! STAGING 
ENVIRONMENT!" ;)
