[TYPO3-debian] Mail Server not on localhost (here: another machine in LAN)

Thanks a lot for the quick help.
We were able to get it running by using "smtp" for $TYPO3_CONF_VARS['MAIL']['transport'].
Fortunately all the settings are explained on the configuration page.

By knowing the variable names I finally found some documentation:

Sometimes it's not so easy to get around as a newbie
