[TYPO3-debian] safe_mode woes

i just tried to get typo3 installed on a box running etch, both are the 
versions currently available from the repositories. it seems like i 
can't  get  font rendering working - the test provided by the install 
script is constantly failing. otoh, all works well when turning off 
php5's safe_mode (which i'd prefer to have enabled).
could this be an issue with php/libgd not being able to get access to 
libfreetype? gd.so doesn't appear to be statically linked ...
are there any hints on how i could resolve this issue?
