[TYPO3-debian] Problems with mails

When I run TYPO3 on a Debian server, should I do some special setup before TYPO3 will be able to send mails?

 

I use the direct_mail extension, but I even can't receive the result of a test mail. (I had tried another mailer extension, but that didn't work either)

I'm unsure if my installation relay smtp to the mail server, but the mail server has been open to traffic from the Debian/Typo3 server IP.

 

If Debian has to be told where to relay smtp post, where do I tell it now?
