Since I just did
apt-get remove --purge php4-gd
apt-get install php4-gd
it wasn't really 'old stuff'.

You are completely right. I simply was astonished by the fact, that this
time just reinstalling did the trick. Rarely this is the solution in
Linux/Debian.

Works like a charm and I am really impressioned.
Now just trying to get it working on postgresql, my preferred DBMS.
