Seems as if we both can`t sleep, but do "server stuff" early in the morning

Let`s agree upon that it`s not the "Windoze way of solving problems" in
general, because sometimes after many upgrades (esp. from
unstable/experimental or backports) old extensions are left in php`s
extension folder (which then conflict with the new one) or - as in this case
- the appropriate php.ini-entry will not be set automagically by apt. In
those cases a forced purge of old stuff is quite handy. The difference to
windoze is: apt will still do it all for you! Only in ultra rare cases a
user has to look around on the disk on his/her own. Even then, one still
knows where to look and what to look for - in windoze those "registry keys &
.dll-hell" would probably drive you mad in such a case.. :)
