[Typo3-debian] mod_rewrite does not work

hi everybody,
 
i have typo3 running on a sarge-server. management is done with vhcs 2.5.
everything works fine except mod_rewrite. i have a symlink of rewrite.load
placed in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled which links to rewrite.load in
"mods-available". this file includes "LoadModule rewrite_module
/usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_rewrite.so"
 
when i use "simulate static document" i get internal server errors.
 
how do i find out if mod_rewrite works?
