[Typo3-debian] Debian PHP4-GD2 without gif support, what can i do?

Hello dear list,
now that i have installed imagemagick 4.2.9 ( thanks to Michael Stucki and
Sven Wilhelm - u rule guys! ) i am yet again in front of another huge
problem ( will it ever end?! :-| ):
Debian *still* does not even support a php4-gd2 module capable of even
reading gif. No php4-gd(1) module with this feature either.
Without its gif-features, typo3 is absolutely useless to me. The
"png-only-option for gd" within typo3 results in total madness:
backgroundcolor is suddenly foreground(text)color and vice versa,
text-shadows are inverted black pictures without text, but with "white
shadow...", textcolors suddenly do not match at all etc. ...
( all imagemagick-tests, within typo3-install and my own, now run perfectly
- so please understand, that this is a "gd-gif-debian" related problem only
:) )
So what can i do? I`ve read that recompiling this source (php4-gd2) isn`t
easy at all - because there is no simple "switch" implemented, which
de/activates gif-support (like in imagemagick-source), but i would have to
add gif-support all by myself. Useless to say, that i can`t do this.
I am already considering windows-os again..so sick with that debian "legal
stuff" paranoia and in this case with the outdated packages, because since
18.06.2004 there is no more lzw-patent anymore at all (at least in europe
and us) .... :(
Any saving ideas *highly appreciated!*
best regards
