that part is right, you need some additional packages for working with 
kernel 2.6

partly right, you shouldn't mix distributions, but also be very 
carefully with backports.

For one installation I use a woody system as base with kernel-2.6 
additions from below

### backported debs to keep linux 2.6 running on woody
deb http://www.fs.tum.de/~bunk/debian woody/kernel-26 main

If you need more from sarge/sid also think about a chrooted
installation so that your base system can still be mostly a woody.

In the special case above, I have 5 chrooted systems on one woody
systems that only provides an ssh access itself.

Keep track about what packages comes from which release.
