I think so... what I did was to download a .zip-package and try with 
that - and then the success was sure! It also meant that I now know the 
structure of the directories and files. A short "install T3 on 
Debian/unstable for dummies" would look something like this:

1. Install Apache (1 or 2 - doesn't matter)
2. Install PHP4
3. Install MySQL
4. Download TYPO3 site in a zip-file (approx. 14MB)
5. unzip site to /var/www/<name>
6. run http://localhost/<name>/typo3/install

That's it! At least for me it was :)
