[Typo3-debian] RealUrl performance and Debian stable

Does anyone have experience with RealUrl-extension on a woody server ?

Customers are complaining about a long initiation time of the first page
visited (sometimes 10-20 seconds). The website is placed on a high trafic
server, cpu load is only 3-4 % average and max 30 %. It's a dual Xeon/SCSI
based system, which should be able to handle it.

Maybe it's a problem with the apache rewrite rules set in 1.3.26?

Any help or ideas is more than welcome :)
