Hint for sid users: 

As sid is updated so fast, at the tine of this rewrite sid`s gd2 libraries
*should* now already provide sufficent gif support. 
So this solution is now maybe only interesting to sarge users. Although it
will *still* fine work for sid users as well, for sid users it is much
easier to "apt-get" just the appropriate "original" sid-packages.

However, in sarge the official packages are *still* of version 2.0.23-2 -
means without gif-support:

Package libgd2

    * stable (libs): GD Graphics Library version 2
      2.0.1-10: alpha arm hppa i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
    * testing (oldlibs): GD Graphics Library version 2
      2.0.23-2: alpha arm hppa i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
    * unstable (oldlibs): GD Graphics Library version 2
      2.0.28-2: alpha arm hppa hurd-i386 i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc
s390 sparc


So sarge users still have to use and compile source now directly from
boutell or from the "good old patch" location i mentioned. No "apt-get"-ease
for sarge users till today.
