seems you don't have mysql-support in php.
sorry, i forgot to mention that you need to install php4-mysql package:

apt-get install php4-mysql

compare phpinfo() before and after installation.

debian hint: additional php4 packages for woody can be found at:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
look for php4 in <search package directories> section
