check ./configure --help in the php-source directory for gd/freetype/ttf 
support options.
you also need to have gd/freetype installed.
maybe providing an output of your phpinfo(); could help us.

regarding this is a debian specific list, i recommend installing debian 
packages:
apt-get install php4 php4-gd2
