Where are your sites located? Are you sure they are in /var/lib/typo3/...?
Normally, this is just the source. The rest of the installation (i.e. the
real site) is located somewhere else.

So you will simply need to add an .htaccess file containing the text you
wrote in your last mail. Add this into your site directory and you're done
(make sure that you have set the AllowOverrides directive to "all").
