We have done both, booking ahead and going into hotel after hotel looking for a room. My advice is book ahead if at all possible. Go on a site like www.bestwesternphanganburi.com to check out available hotels then go directly to the site of the hotel you like. Many times you are able to get a better price and the management appreciates it.
